Vectum Research Lecture

Each period, Vectum organises a Research Lecture in collaboration with the KE Department (Quantitative Economics). This period's lecture will be given by Prof. Antoon Pelsser, Professor of Finance and Actuarial Science at Maastricht University.

During this lecture, Prof. Pelsser will present his research and discuss the development of modern optimisation methods.

Abstract

Operations Research has undergone a significant transformation over the past few decades. The classical Simplex Method for Linear Programming has been complemented by modern interior-point methods that can be applied to a much broader class of convex optimisation problems.

In this lecture, Prof. Pelsser will explore this paradigm shift and the ideas that shaped it. Beyond the mathematical developments themselves, the lecture will consider how scientific progress actually happens: through small steps, unexpected insights and discoveries that gradually lead to new ways of thinking.

The lecture is designed to be accessible and interesting to students with an interest in Operations Research, mathematics, economics or optimisation.

During this session, we will briefly present Vectum's different committees and explain what each committee does and how you can get involved.
