Research Lecture Period 4
Each period Vectum organises a research lecture in collaboration with the KE department (Quantitative Economics department), and this period’s lecture will be given by Lissa Melis, an assistant professor Operations Research and Operations Management at SBE. It will take place on Tuesday, February 25th at 19h30 at SBE, room TS53 C-1.03.
During this lecture, Lissa will present to us his research on the topic: Beyond Uber: Optimizing the on-demand bus routing problem
Abstract: “What if booking a bus ride were as easy as ordering an Uber? The On-Demand Bus Routing Problem (ODBRP) tackles this challenge by dynamically assigning passengers to a fleet of shared minibuses in real time. Unlike traditional public bus transport with fixed routes and schedules, on-demand buses adapt to demand, optimizing routes to minimize travel times while maximizing efficiency.
In this talk, I will present a heuristic algorithm capable of planning thousands of passengers across hundreds of vehicles within a fraction of a second. A key innovation is the integration of bus stop assignment, which significantly reduces travel times compared to systems where passengers choose their own stops. By balancing passenger convenience with routing efficiency, the approach provides a cost-effective, scalable alternative to individual ride-hailing services like Uber, making shared mobility both affordable and sustainable.
The presentation will conclude with some open questions and future research directions, including the joint optimization of fixed-route and on-demand bus services, as well as the challenges and opportunities of implementing on-demand public transport in practice."
BEFORE this lecture, you are also invited to come to our Board Information Session at 20h15 during which we will shortly present the different board positions. If you want to help strengthen Vectum, then make sure to join! (Note that you don’t have to join both the lecture and the presentation)
Finally, we will end the night with drinks at the Preuverij.
